Steps and
information needed to initiate a proteomics project with the Protein
Characterization Laboratory (PCL).
#1) Contact Thorkell
Andresson directly by email (andressont@nih.gov) or phone (mobile:
240-840-1383 or office: 301-846-7190).
#2) Following the
initial contact, including short description of the experiment, there will be
two main paths:
i.
Samples for simple analysis such as protein
identification (gel bands, affinity purification beads with bound proteins, protein
solutions with handful of proteins, etc.) can be shipped to PCL Frederick with
information about the samples.
Information
needed:
----Scientist and PI name with contact information
Sample type and number
The species the sample originate from (Human, mouse, other)
If samples are in buffer, what is the buffer?
Have affinity purification beads been washed in detergent free buffer
and indicate the final buffer the beads have been resuspended in.
In
general PCL prefer to do all sample processing inhouse, however if the entire
samples processing is done by NHLBI laboratory, information about the estimated
amount of peptide in each sample would be very helpful. In additions include information about the protease
used for the protein digestion, alkylation reagent used and the buffer composition
if peptide samples are shipped in solution.
ii. For more complex projects follow up meeting will be scheduled for more in-depth discussion about the goal, best approach, and method development if needed. During and following the meeting an experimental plan will be devised.
#3) Sample shipping information:
For shipping samples use the NCI-FCRF couriers. here is their information:
NCI-FCRF courier service @ (301) 846-1175, to schedule a pick-up use their web site.

Once the shipping information have been entered, print
out the summary sheet and tape it to the box used for shipping the samples.
